Finding the Best Vacation Deals

Understanding the Nuts & Bolts of Vacation Specials improves your research time allocated to finding the Best Vacation Deals. Upon finalizing your vacation plans (type of vacation, destination, specific ship/resort, etc.), you need to know when the Final Payment/Balance would be due. Most balances are due 45-60 days prior to departure.

The following example is based on the balance due 60 days prior to departure.
Period Action
Up to 60 days prior to departure Normal Reservations (non-special promotions) are made. Promotions are run during this time to focus your attention on a specific cruise line, or resort. It always pays to check the special promotions periodically because special promotions are distributed daily, but, as long as cruise lines and resorts are accepting normal reservations, their is no need to run Special Price Promotions prior to 60 days prior to departure.
60 days prior to departure Final Balance is due. A percentage of people pay their balance, and a percentage cancel their existing reservation.
30-60 days prior to departure If the sales volume projections are not achieved, Special Promotions are initiated.

There are advantages and disadvantages to Booking Early and booking during Special Promotions:

Accommodations are limited to what's available.
If Upgrades are available, the ones booked early are rewarded over the last minute reservations.

You get what you paid for.
If the fare is reduced, whereby a Special Promotion is run to attract new reservations, the suppliers (cruise lines, resorts, etc.) tend to reduce the fares of the existing reservations upon bringing it to their attention. In addition to receiving a reduction in the fare, you maintain your superior accommodations, and may even be upgraded, resulting in receiving a Superior Vacation Value for your dollar.

Responding to a Special Promotion may result in a lower vacation price.
