Brazil is a country in South America that is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the east. It is the fifth-largest country by geographical area, the fifth most populous country, and the fourth most populous democracy in the world.

Entry Requirements:
All U.S. Citizens and Canadian nationals, including infants, must have both a passport that is valid for six months past the date of first entry into Brazil, and a tourist visa, which is obtained from the Brazilian embassy or nearest consulate. The visa is valid for five years.

The language of Brazil is Portuguese. English is spoken by some of the staff at hotels, and tourist businesses.

Currency:
The currency of Brazil is the real (R$). The real comes in coin denominations of R$1 and 50, 10, 5, and 1 centavos; bank notes of R$1, R$5, R$10, R$50, R$100.

Major Credit Cards are widely accepted. ATMs (MasterCard Cirrus and VISA Plus) are available.

Time Zone:
Brazil covers four time zones. The time in most of Brazil visited by foreign tourists is three hours behind Greenwich Mean Time (GMT-3). This is true of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Brasiiía, Bahia, Minas Gerais etc.

Vila Nova da Praia Shopping Center

Vila Nova DA Praia (The New Beach Village) is an entertainment center (a nightly event with music and shows) where a small Brazilian town is perfectly reproduced. You will find craft, decoration, cloths, and jewelry shops, bars, restaurants, a show club, a bank, a cyber café, a culture center, a Kid's Club (Mini Club for ages 5-8 and a Kid's Clubs for ages 9-12), a travel agency – even an eco-travel agency, to plan unforgettable ecological trekking tours.

Tennis Center

The Tennis Center has a Club House with a bar and Pro Shop, 15 Tennis Courts, 4 Paddle Courts, and 2 Squash Courts (with air conditioning).

Praia do Forte

Praia do Forte (means 'Fortress Beach') is a quiet fishing village, 26 miles south of Sauipe, home to some of the best beaches in Bahia, a castle, a turtle protection project, an ecological reserve and the original fishing village from which the area takes its name.

Shuttle service operates between Costa do Sauipe and Praia do Forte, operating several times daily from 9am to 9pm Monday - Saturday (later return on Saturdays); time varies on Sunday. $Charge

Tamar Project

The mission of the Tamar Project is to save Brazil's giant sea turtles and their hatchings During the nesting season (September - March), workers patrol the shore nightly to locate nests and move those found to be at risk to safer areas or to the open-air hatchery at the Tamar base on the beach end of the village's main street. You can listen to lectures, watch a educational video, and view the small turtles that have not been released to the sea.

Garcia D'Avila

Visit the ruins of the Garcia D'Avila Castle, which was first settled in 1549. Garcia, a clerk for the Portuguese government arrived with Brazil's first governor general, Tomé de Sousa. As a big landowner, Garcia introduced the country to cattle raising and coconut harvesting. To protect the coast, he built a medieval-style castle that served as a fort (started 1551 and finished 1624). It sits on an estate of some 10,000 hectares of gardens and coconut groves. Forte do Forte means 'Fortress Beach.'

Sapiranga Reserve

A jeep tour enables you to explore this an ecological reserve. Its 1,482 acres of secondary Atlantic forest, which contains rare orchids and bromeliads, and make up a sanctuary for endangered animals. Horse, bike and foot trails will take you through the reserve. Whitewater rafting is available on the Rio Pojuca, which flows through the park. Visit Lago Timeantube, where more than 187 species of native birds have been sighted. During July through October, whale watching excursions are available.

Papa Gente

Swim and snorkel in the safe crystal clear waters of the Papa Gente, a 10-foot deep natural pool formed by reefs at the ocean's edge.
