Cruise Terminology

Accommodation The passenger's room, stateroom, or personal accommodation.
Add on A supplementary charge added to the cruise fare, usually applied to correlated air fare and/or post cruise land tours.
AFT The back of the ship.
Air/sea A package consisting of air to and from the port of embarkation, and the cruise.
Alleyway A passageway or corridor.
Amidship or Midship The middle of the ship.
Baggage Allowance The amount of luggage permitted by the Supplier, airline or cruise line, at no cost.
Basis Two The cabin rate per person for a cabin designed to accommodate at least two persons.
Berth A Bed. Most staterooms/cabins are designed to accommodate two passengers, and come with two lower berths.
Booking A request (via telephone, FAX, CRS, etc.) to the Reservations Department of a cruise line to secure an option on a cabin.
Bow The front of the ship. (Opposite of Stern)
Bridge The location on the ship where the Captain and his/her Officers are responsible for steering the ship.
Cabin The passenger's room, stateroom, or accommodation.
Category A price list from the most expensive cabins to the least expensive cabins.
Conductor's Ticket A free cruise ticket usually earned by the Leader of a group through selling a minimum amount of cabins.
Cruise Fare The cost of the cruise excluding taxes, port charges, airline, gratuities, shore excursions, etc.
Debarkation Exiting the ship. (Opposite of Embarkation)
Deck Plan A diagram describing cabin & public areas in relation to each other.
Deposit The portion of the payment required at the time of booking to secure a cabin.
Embarkation Entering or boarding the ship. (Opposite of Debarkation)
Forward The front of the ship. (Opposite of Stern)
Final Payment Payment of the 'Balance Due' on the remainder of the cruise fare plus taxes, port charges, air addon, and pre/post cruise packages.
First Sitting/Seating The earlier of the two meal times in the ship's dining room.
Galley The ship's kitchen.
Gangway The opening in the ship and the ramp by which passengers board and leave the ship.
Gratuities Tips for personal services rendered by the ship's service personnel.
GRT Gross Registered Tonnage; a measurement of 100 cubic feet of enclosed revenue earning space within a ship.
Guarantee The Cruiseline's promise that a passenger will sail on a specific voyage in a specific price/cabin category will be charged a rate no higher than would ordinarily apply for that voyage; occasionally results in an improvement of accommodations at no additional cost.
Guarantee Share Fare The acceptance of a single booking at the cost-saving double occupancy rate with the understanding that the client is willing to share the cabin with a stranger of the same sex.
Inside Inside Cabin; I/S; A cabin without windows or portholes to offer a view of the sea.
Knot The unit of measure for ship speed; equal to one nautical mile per hour.
Lower Bed A single bed placed at the conventional height from the floor.
Manifest A list of passengers, crew, and cargo.
Nautical Mile unit of measure for distance at sea. One nautical mile equals 6,080.2 feet.
Open Seating Compared to table assignments, free access to any unoccupied tables in the dining room.
Option The Cruiseline's offering of a specific cabin (or guarantee) for a specified period of time during which the passenger decides whether or not to accept. The acceptance is confirmed by the Cruiseline receiving either the deposit or final payment from the Travel Agency (via the passenger).
Outside Outside Cabin; O/S; A cabin with windows or portholes offering a view of sea.
Passage Contract Detailed terms of responsibility and accountability located in the cruise ticket.
Pitch The rise and fall of the ship's bow. As the ship sails forward, it rocks from the front to the rear of the ship.
Port The left side of the ship when facing the ship. (Opposite of Starboard)
Port Charges An assessment which includes port taxes, collected by the Cruiseline, and paid to a local government authority.
Port Taxes A charge levied by a local government authority to be paid by the passenger.
Quad Rate The per person fare available to four passengers sharing one cabin.
Review Dates The periodic evaluation of the progress of the sale and promotion of cabin utilization by Cruiselines; usually occurs 90, 60, and 30 days prior to the sailing date.
Room Cabin, Stateroom.
Sailing Time The actual time when the ship is scheduled to clear the dock and sail.
Second Sitting The latter of two meal times in the ship's dining room.
Shore Excursions Tours at the ports of call for which an extra charge is usually applied.
Single Occupancy Sole occupancy of a cabin designed for two or more passengers, a premium is normally charged called a Single Supplement.
Stabilizer A retractable device that extends on each side of the ship, below the waterline to provide a more stable sailing. It minimizes the rocking motion on the ship, which minimizes motion sickness.
Starboard The right side of the ship when facing the ship. (Opposite of Port)
Stateroom Cabin, room.
Stern The rear of the ship. (Opposite of Bow)
Stopover Leaving the ship at a port of call and rejoining it at a subsequent port of call or rejoining the ship upon it's return to the earlier port of call.
Tender A small vessel, sometimes the ship's lifeboat, used to move passengers to and from the ship and shore when the ship is anchored.

Transfers Transportation between the ship and other modes such as airports, hotels, shore excursions, and other departure points.
Triple Rate The per person fare available for three passengers sharing one cabin.
Upper Bed A single bed higher from the floor than usual which is often recessed into the ceiling or wall during the day; similar to a bunk bed.
Waitlist The Cruiseline's endeavor to obtain cabins for passengers on a first-come-first-serve basis when all cabins have been sold, are under deposit, or are under an option.
